HISTORY OF PHOMOLONG PUBLIC SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION:

During the era of apartheid, education was a rare or scarce commodity in the black African communities. Most villages and towns had no access to education. Consequently churches or missionaries had to play a role to ensure establishment of educational institutions.

Until 1960,Kroonstad had only three schools namely Likubu, Maokeng and Bodibeng. The three schools got their names from the environment in which they existed: they were named after the environmental institution or surrounding, the thorn trees ( Maokeng, where thorn trees are ), Likubu (hippopotamus) who according to related tales, existed or were formed in the false river mostly known as Ntha. In Sesotho the word Ntha means the beginning of the river, which the Basotho would name Bolibeng, lived the hippopotamus (Likubu. Hence the three schools were named after the bio- diversity that exist there.

The three schools mentioned above came into being or were built through the influence of the sister of Notre Dame situated in Kroonstad who thought above the St Claver Catholic school as well as the three schools mentioned above.

An urbanization increased and became a reality, Marabastad could not allocate most residents (blacks) as a result, Seeisoville was built and Phomolong immediately thereafter.

Lack of accommodation at schools and overcrowding, due to urbanization made authorities to think about the establishment of a new school,Phomolong Public school. At the time the school system or structure existence of lower primary, higher primary and high school (secondary school existed in the late 70’s) Likubu before it was a higher primary, it was a leader lower primary for Maokeng Primary School was built. A leader school was also built (Boiteko was from Sub-A to Std2(Grade1-Grade4) and Phomolong Primary school started from standard 3 to standard 6(Grade5-Grade8)   so it would be able to feed high school such as Bodibeng. Fortunately due to increase of leaners more  high schools had to be built hence the existence of Kananelo and others.

The growth of learner population and new location especially led to the demand for a new school hence the existence of Phomolong lower primary (subA-std2) and Phomolong higher primary (std3-std6).

Phomolong higher primary was built  in 1960.The building was allocated at a quarry.. The community around worked hard to clean the quarry for the built of the school as we see it today. They also built a care-takers’s house seen today by themselves.

In 1960 , when the school was ultimately built, Mr Rev Malekele became the  first principal and introduced a lot of cultures such as music (at parade morning), athletics and excellence in academic.

After his term, the following individuals became principals, Moses Mabitsi, Mr Mogorosi (coach and founder of Dimamarela lately known as Kroonstad Area) Mr Malebane,Mr M.M.Kgotlagomang, Mrs Chala-the first female of the school, Mrs Senoge-who acted as a principal until 2016 when she got promoted to Likubu school where she retired after being a principal till 2024.

Mr Hlahane-principal from 2016-2022, Mr S.M. Radebe-principal from 2022-2025, Mrs Kopung-acting principal from February 2025.and was permanently appointed in the same year on July 1st.

Over the years, under different principals, the school excelled in and achieved greatly in the following :

The houses or groups of the school Phomolong Primary would compete against each other. They enjoyed the support of school parents and the community and this culture to other schools whereby schools athletics competition existed.

MUSIC

The school had a culture of promoting music, every morning at school parade song would he bring e.g. allegiance chorus etc. No wonder in the late 70’s around 1975 the school won the Eisteddfod Marci Competition in East London under the leadership of Mr. Moses Mabitsi later the principal of Ntha primary School.

In 2024, one of our teachers. Ms Granny Dikhang represented the province in National Teaching Awards and got position 2.

In 2010 when the school celebrated 50 years of existence, the then MEC of education, the late ntate Tate Makgoe, was impressed by the commitment and hard work displayed by the teachers, parents and learners at Phomolong school. He then immediately ordered the erection of a hall, it was completed in 2011. Many more good things followed, because thereafter the Grade R classes were built followed by the school kitchen.
